Gravendeel (-'s)

‘s-Gravendeel lies in the eastern part of the Hoeksche Waard, on the west bank of the Dordtse Kil. The Kiltunnel provides a good link-up with the island of Dordrecht. The name ‘s-Gravendeel is derived from “Des Graven Deel” [the counts’ portion], because the area was owned by the counts of Holland.

Along the river the Oude Maas lies the polder “Groot Koninkrijk” [Large Kingdom] , one of the last original grass marshes. It is a very rare freshwater tidal landscape. The hamlets of De Wacht and Schenkeldijk are also part of the municipality of ‘s-Gravendeel.
