Alblasserdam was founded in 1447 and gets its name from the construction of a dam in the small river Alblas. Before then it formed one entity, one domain together with Oud-Alblas. The old centre was badly bombed on 11th May 1940. Fortunately the historic Kerkstraat and the characteristic buildings on the dike along the river Noord have largely survived.
Alblasserdam is also a good place to start a bicycle trip to the famous Molengebied [Windmill area] Kinderdijk, with its 19 windmills. But starting from Alblasserdam you can also make beautiful trips through the Alblasserwaard by bike or canoe.
